Now there is something for everyone from gas and electric fireplaces
to woodburning and woodstoves. They can come in one, two or even
three-sided configurations. There are even electric fireplaces that
hang on the wall like a picture.
Gas fireplaces can heat up a room, in fact they can heat up more than
one room with ductwork and separate controls. No longer do you need a
chimney or access to an outside wall, a direct vent can be installed
with access through the roof. Inserts for both woodburning and gas
fireplaces are now being made with high efficiency specs and still
remaining very attractive. With the almost endless options available
the popularity of fireplaces is spreading, it’s becoming a standard
part of a new home especially in single detached homes. The single
biggest change is the move towards gas units; it’s hard to beat the
convenience of flicking a switch on a gas or electric fire.
If you’re planning on renovating, a fireplace should be on your list
of upgrades, especially in a single detached home. The buying market
expects it - it is truly a sound investment when reselling. When
entertaining the idea of placing a gas fireplace in the lower level be
sure to have the installer insulate behind the gas unit, it
dramatically increases the efficiency (believe I learned the hard
way). Also if you have a brick chimney, a concrete cap adds years of
life to the brickwork.
