More and more people are electing to use metal studding over wood in their home renovation projects. Let’s look at the pros and cons of metal over wood studs.

Metal Studs - Pros

  • It’s free of the allergy causing adhesives and chemicals used to treat wood

  • No drywall screws popping later, also no shrinking or warping

  • Increased strength allows for more design flexibility

  • Provides better protection in lightning storms because the steel creates a path to the ground

  • It is lightweight and easier to handle

  • It is manufactured with pre-punched holes for piping and wiring which minimizes the preparation work for other trades people

Metal Studs - Cons

  • It is cold, and sharp to work with

  • Extra insulation is recommended due to poor thermal properties

  • It is harder to find trained trades people to work with metal studs

If renovation/building plans include a home theatre system, the chattering and vibration of metal studs could be an issue. Some enthusiasts insist speakers with metal studs are not a good combination and sound quality suffers.
