Buyers want their homes to look great, but not all decisions should be
based on appearance alone. Our lifestyles have changed and so has
construction. We need to consider comfort and a healthy environment.
We are now creating special in-house retreats; luxurious ensuites for
long steamy showers and baths, saunas to soothe aching muscles, indoor
hot tubs for families to enjoy year-round. Energy efficient airtight
homes may add to our comfort, but building materials containing
cellulose and glue tend to retain moisture. This combination can
create an environment that can affect our health unless we stay
informed.
Newer homes can release an incredible amount of moisture from
concrete, lumber and other building materials. Cooking, bathing and
just every day living also releases moisture into the air. To this we
add outside moisture such as rain, snow and everything in-between to
create concern for a homeowner. Excessive moisture can build up inside
walls, under floors and above ceilings, creating the perfect breeding
grounds for mold. And mold has been a major allergy trigger for sinus
infections and asthma (of which our society is suffering more and
more). What can you do to keep you home healthy and dry? Look for my
next article.
